Yet another reason to celebrate fall and the month of October…Pumpkin Beer!!! We love being festive and enjoying the many different types of pumpkin beer the world has to offer during the month of October. This month we will be trying a new type each weekend to share with you all! This week’s pairing of the week is…
Patty Melts with Shipyard Brewing Pumpkinhead
As I was saying, October is the month for all things pumpkin…including our beer 😋 I went into the liquor store and purchased three different types (one for each remaining weekend in October) and this happened to be the lucky winner for this beautiful fall weekend! It is a very affordable beer and was actually not too heavy. It was more of a light, wheat beer and was very easy to drink! Sometimes pumpkin beers can be pretty heavy and darker. This one I loved because of how light it was with just a touch of pumpkin flavor. I was a bit nervous to pair it with this recipe, but it actually ended up tasting really good! The pumpkin beer was a very nice addition.
I chose to pair this beer with this patty melt recipe for a couple of reasons. One- while doing my research I read that this type of beer would pair well with a grilled cheese…so I thought, why not throw a hamburger patty in there? 🤣 And reason number two…If you couldn’t already tell by the picture…these patty melts are TO DIE FOR. If you have never had or heard of a patty melt before…prepare for your life to change. It’s basically a grilled cheese but with caramelized onions and a hamburger patty. 🤤 These are my brothers favorite meal that I make and have quickly become one of Jordan’s favorite as well. You won’t be disappointed!
From my kitchen to yours…Enjoy!
A delicious combination of cheeseburger and grilled cheese
Ingredients
- 1 lb hamburger meat
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp. pepper
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp steak seasoning
- *you can substitute all of the above for seasoned, frozen patties (obviously won’t taste as good!)
- 2 yellow onions, sliced
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 6 slices Provolone cheese
- Mayonnaise
- Butter
- 6 slices Sourdough or Marble Rye bread
- **I usually use marbled rye, there was none at the store I was at, so I tried sourdough and it was equally as delicious!
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine hamburger meat, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, pepper, salt and steak seasoning
- Shape meat into 3 equal size patties (I used my hamburger patty press from pampered chef- find a similar one here)
- Lightly season outside of patties with steak seasoning
- Heat about 1 1/2 Tbsp butter in a large skillet over medium heat, add sliced onions, season with garlic powder and steak seasoning, cook, stir often
- While onions are cooking- grill hamburger patties over high heat ,about 3 minutes per side for medium rare/medium (depends a lot on your grill)
- Continue to stir/cook onions. When they turn more of a translucent color and are soft, sprinkle about 1 tbsp of sugar, continue to stir.
- While onions are still cooking, prep the bread by spreading mayonnaise (as desired) inside each slice of bread
- **Do NOT place patties on bread yet-it will cause sandwich to be soggy
- Once onions are more of a brown, caramel color, remove from heat.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat for the sandwiches
- Prep sandwiches- place patty on one slice of bread, top with onion, 2 slices of provolone cheese and slice of bread. Spread butter on the outside of the slices of bread.
- Cook sandwich, butter side down, for about 2-3 minutes per side or until golden
- Serve with sweet potato or steak fries and a cold glass of Shipyard Brewery Pumpkinhead! Enjoy!
